I don't really think Sam Altman gave bad advice. It's just that the advice he gave didn't/doesn't apply for the likes of him. When you are working on world changing product with world class talent (not some derivative work that 90% of us build), the set of "normal/regular" advice doesn't apply. In other words, I believe for the 90% of startups building "X for Y" kind of companies, I believe, the lean-startup approach still works. How many of us can raise a Billion dollars with no product? Sam Altman and Elon Musk could.

This is a really interesting point: "will OpenAI run two playbooks: one to become the next Google and the other to become the next Microsoft?"

They're certainly in bed with MSFT already, and seem to be gearing up toward an enterprise market... but they're also used by tens of millions of people every day. If I had to guess, I'd say the enterprise market is the focus.
