In 458 BC, the Romans needed a dictator (an office reserved for extreme emergencies in Roman times) to respond to a massive enemy invasion.
Evidently these men did not rely on official power and titles to define themselves and be satisfied with life. They must've had a strong sense of self-identity that made thirsting for and clinging to official power unnecessary.
